SFC Group D: Summerhill overpower ‘Tones
August 13, 2023

Summerhill recorded their second win of the campaign at Pairc Tailteann on Sunday afternoon when finishing with eight points to spare over Wolfe Tones

Summerhill ………….2-13
Wolfe Tones ………..0-11

Conor Gilliepie’s had three men to spare with Wolfe Tones – falling to their first defeat of the campaign – losing Alan Callaghan and Adam O’Neill to black cards when the outcome was sealed. Of more significance to Wolfe Tones was the 14th minute red-carding of Saran O Fionnagain. Numerical deficiency against a team as mobile as Summerhill left last year’s runners-up with too much to do. To their credit, the Tones got the gap down to a single point, 1-7 to 0-9, by the 47th minute. That was as good as it got for the 2021 champions. There was still only a goal in it when in the Barry Dardis’ 57th minute free found Eoghan Frayne who netted to remove any semblance of doubt about the outcome.

Backed by a blustery wind blowing towards the town goal, Wolfe Tones opened the scoring inside 20 seconds courtesy of a close range Cian Ward free. That would be the only time they would lead in the first half. Summerhill replied with 1-3 in an eight-minute spell. Barry Dardis levelled matter from a free. Kevin Ryan made his mark when placing Eoghan Frayne for the lead score. In the ninth minute Kevin Ryan cut through the ‘Tones defence to fire past Ciaran O Gallachoir. Thomas O’Reilly replied for the Kilberry-side. A clash between Kevin Ryan and Saran O Fionnagain resulted in a yellow card for the Summerhill man while the Wolfe Tones player was red carded. The board read 1-3 to 0-2 at this point. Over the remainder of the half Wolfe Tones outscored last year’s runners-up by 0-4 to 0-3. At the break Summerhill led by 1-6 to 0-6

Playing into the wind and a man down, Wolfe Tones set about erasing the deficit. Adam O’Neill’s 47th minute point cut the gap to the minimum. The toll in tackling the arrears seemed to sap the ‘Tones energy as Summerhill widened the gap in the latter stages.
