35 years ago after an absence of nine years Summerhill captained by Pádraic Lyons won their fifth Keegan Cup in 1986. They started off the year with a 1-10 to 0-4 victory over Skryne, who had knocked us out in 1985. They then defeated their neighbours Moynalvey by 10 points, followed by a 14 point win over St.Patrick’s. Summerhill met Syddan in the quarter-final and beat them by 3 points. In the semi-final, Summerhill were less than impressive against Nobber. They failed to score in the second-half but scraped through by 1-6 to 0-8.
Dennis Murtagh was sent off in the semi-final and missed the final through suspension. This was a big loss to Summerhill but a young Peter Nangle was called in for the final. In a game played in Kells as Pairc Tailteann was under going renovations, Summerhill beat Seneschalstown on a score line of 0-13 to 1-8 to lift the Keegan Cup for the 5th time in 13 years.
