U20 Championship Rd 1

Summerhill travelled to Skryne on an atrocious evening for the first round of the U20 championship. Despite the very wet conditions both teams to their credit served up an exciting game with the result in doubt until the final minute.

The home side were quickest out of the blocks with two early points but Summerhill were soon level with points from Darragh McVann and Eoghan Frayne. Unlike the weather the scoring dried up with both sides adding two further point each as the game approached half time. Summerhill hit a purple patch in the run up to half time. Points from Eoghan Frayne and Jamie O’Shea were quickly followed by a Luke Moran goal on the stroke of half time leaving the score at the break Summerhill 1-6 Skryne 0-4.

Skryne began the 2nd half in great form with four unanswered point from Niall Finnerty to close the gap back to just the minimum by the 10th minute. An Eoghan Frayne free extended Summerhill’s lead once more but 3 more points from the home side saw them take the lead with 5 minutes remaining on the clock. Summerhill rallied again with 2 points from Frayne to retake the lead once more but with 30 minutes on the clock a Niall Finnerty point drew the sides level once more. Both sides had chances in injury time but the Summerhill men secured a hard-fought win with a Eoghan Frayne free on the stroke of full time. Final score Summerhill 1-10 Skryne 0-12.

Summerhill will be delighted to come away with the win given how little preparation they had due to both adult teams been in finals the previous weekend. Next up for Summerhill is a home game v Dunshaughlin next Saturday.
