Premier Div2 Championship Rd2

Summerhill’s 2nd team headed for Paddy O’Brien Park to take on O’Mahony’s on Sunday morning in the Premier Division 2 Championship round 2 fixture. They hoping to build on their win in round one over Simonstown and take a big step towards qualification for the knockout stages.

Summerhill got off to the best start with a goal from their first attack. A long ball played in from Ciaran Gillespie was knocked down by Cathal Brien to the inrushing Conor Summerville who fired to the back of the net with less than 2 minutes on the clock. Within a minute Summerhill scored a second goal when Cathal Brien’s pass from 30 meters out intended for Connie McGrath deceived the O’Mahonys keeper to go all the way to the back of the net. The goal continued in the 6th minute when Kevin Lyons palmed the ball to the net. In a move started by Lyons who ran from mid field before laying the ball off to Cathal Brien whose shot was blocked but fell kindly to Lyons who had continued his run to score. O’Mahonys finally got off the mark in the 10th minute with a point from play followed up quickly with a second from a mark. Still without a point on the board Summerhill struck for their 4th goal in the 12th minute. Excellent interplay between Conor Summerville, Eamonn Ryan and Cathal Brien saw Ryan palm the ball into the back of the net to leave the score at that stage 4-0 to 0-2. With the big lead Summerhill perhaps got a bit complacent and were very wasteful missing a number of decent scoring chances. The finally registered their first point of the half from Cathal Brien in the 22nd minute. Conor Summerville added 2 good points from play in the run up to half time leaving the score at the break 4-3 to 0-6.

With the result never really in doubt the second half lacked intensity but Summerhill kept the scoreboard ticking over with some nice scores. One highlight was a point from Eamonn Ryan who turned over an O’Mahonys forward on his own 21m line and carried the ball at speed right down the middle of the pitch to the opposing 21 before kicking over a fine score. Summerhill’s 5th goal came in the 7th minute of the half when Kevin Lyons burst through the O’Mahonys defense to fire an unstoppable shot to the back of the net. A late goal from O’Mahonys narrowed the margin slightly with Summerhill running out winners on a score line of Summerhill 5-9 to O’Mahonys 1-11. Summerhill will be happy to come away with the win but know they will need to be less wasteful with scoring opportunities with stiffer tests ahead.
