Feis Cup Rd 7

There was no neighbourly love on display in Moynalvey on Wednesday night as the home side dished out a comprehensive defeat of their opponents in the blue and gold. Summerhill have enjoyed a good run in this Feis Cup. They lost the first game heavily to St Peters but picked things up substantially after that to record good wins over Dunshaughlin, Gaelic Colmcilles, Navan O’Mahoney’s and Donaghmore Ashbourne. A walkover from Curraha sealed a semifinal spot, and while the Hill would much prefer to keep the winning streak going, Moynalvey were in no humour to grant such free passage on their newly refurbished home turf.

Leading from the off, the home side county footballers Cillian O’Sullivan and Padraic Harnan, hurlers Mark O’Sullivan and David Reilly were prominent all through the game. Sustained pressure on the Summerhill backs yielded 6 points from frees, 3 each from the boots of Cillian O’Sullivan and David McLoughlin. O’Sullivan was marked tightly by his county colleague Ronan Ryan, but on the day you would have to say that Cillian was on top in this one. Summerhill failed to score after the first water break, with Conor Frayne opening their account, a great mark by Diarmuid McCabe and a Conor Lyons free made up the total first half account for the visitors.
Half time score Moynalvey 0-7 Summerhill 0-3

Summerhill opened the second half with intent, and a point from David Larkin after a minute seemed to raise the spirits. But Moynalvey simply bossed midfield, and with the Harnan’s in particular driving on the home challenge Summerhill just could not make enough headway on the tight pitch. Two points from David Larkin and further frees from Lyons and Frayne at four, eight and twenty minutes meant the visitors were living off scraps. Kevin Ryan scored a beauty off the outside of the boot and Diarmuid McCabe nailed a great 45 to close the Summerhill account.

Game’s involving close neighbours, where friends and family are intermingled, take on a life of their own. It is a quentissential GAA phenomenon. This game was no different, and the atmosphere in Moynalvey had a championship feel to it. Summerhill march on to the semifinal, pride dented a small bit. Best of luck to Moynalvey in the championship. Ach beidh la eile ag an bPaorach!
