Junior A Championship Rd1

Summerhill’s 2nd team took on Gaeil Colmcilles in the first round of the Junior Championship in Dunderry on Sunday in what proved to be a great contest between 2 evenly matched teams. The pitch was in reasonably condition considering the recent weather.

Summerhill payed with the strong breeze in the 1st half and scored some great points from play. Points were exchanged early on with the Kells men leading 3 points to 2 after 10 mins with Summerhill’s points coming from midfielder Eamonn Ryan and championship debutant Jack Bannon. Summerhill scores the next 4 points with 2 from Diarmuid McCabe and 1 from Donal Feeley and Cathal Ryan. With 15 minutes gone, David Myles pulled off a great goal line clearance to keep the Kells men out and maintain Summerhill’s advantage. Further points were exchanged to leave the half time score 0-9 to 0-7 in favour of Summerhill. Gaeil Colmcilles would have been happy enough been only 2 points down given the strong wind they would have at their backs in the 2nd half.

Points were exchanged early on in the 2nd half before Eamon Ryan got on the end of a well worked move to palm the ball into the Kells net from a Cathal Brien pass to stretch the lead out to 4. With the wind at their backs, the Kells men rallied and applies great pressure to the resolute Summerhill back line and slowly but surely cut the Summerhill lead. Further points from Donal Feeley and a Cathal Ryan free maintained the lead but 5 minutes into added on time the Kells men equalised from a well taken free.
